Modern Ninevites
DISCLAIMER - the following thoughts are not political, and are directed to my Christian friends only: Tonight in family devotions we read about Jonah and how he did not want to go to Nineveh to deliver God's message. Of course we know that Nineveh was the capital of Assyria, and Assyria is present day Syria and Northern Iraq (the exact origin and home base of The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria - ISIS). With all the vitriol presently being directed to Syria the past few days, I thought about how difficult Jonah's decision must have been to go and preach to the ISIS of his day (Assyria). Can you imagine being called to go and preach to ISIS? Would you obey, or would you get on a boat (or plane) headed West as quickly as possible? Guess what, we have been called to preach the Gospel to Syrians and ISIS! (Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.) If we do not go, God will probably not carry us to them in the belly of a fish, but maybe He will bring some of them to us in the form of refugees. If modern Ninevites began settling in your neighborhood, how would you treat them? Ten thousand have already arrived! "For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not...Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me." (Matt 25:42-45) Have you considered that Jesus was a refugee once too (Matt 2:13-15)?
